What South London Means Here
South London is a description, not an administrative unit. There is no south London council and no south London borough, which is why provider directories handle the term badly. What people usually mean when they search for a behaviour change consultancy in south London is a firm that understands the organisations below the river, from the professional services estates at London Bridge down to Croydon, and that can be in the room without half a day of travel.
Sidestream is based at 58 Malden Road, London NW5 3HG, which is north of the river. We say that plainly, because the connection matters more than the postcode. Kentish Town, minutes from the office, is a Thameslink station, and the same line runs under central London and out the other side through Blackfriars and Elephant and Castle. Thameslink runs direct from our Kentish Town base to Blackfriars and Elephant and Castle, and East Croydon is fifteen minutes from central London by rail, on a station handling 19.5 million passengers a year, according to Invest in Croydon.
The stronger claim is not geographic anyway. Sidestream's award-recognised production The Accused was made with Goldsmiths, University of London in New Cross and carries the Goldsmiths Public Engagement Award. This page is the working reference for HR directors, heads of learning and development, faculty leads and clinical leads scoping behaviour change work across Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon. For the borough we are actually based in, and the wider picture, see our north London guide and all our London location guides.
The Goldsmiths Anchor in New Cross
Goldsmiths, University of London sits in New Cross, SE14 6NW, less than five minutes' walk from New Cross and New Cross Gate stations and roughly five miles from central London. It was founded in 1891 by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths as the Goldsmiths' Technical and Recreative Institute, became a constituent college of the University of London in 1904, and is known for arts, design, computing, humanities and social sciences.
The Accused came out of that relationship, delivered with HM Courts and Tribunals and Goldsmiths University. It is a 1950s courtroom reconstruction built from the real trial transcripts of Ruth Ellis, the last woman hanged in the UK. Participants serve as jurors, deliberate live, watch the verdict play out, and are then taken through a behavioural debrief that maps their own decisions back to real-world workplace bias patterns. More than 600 participants have been through it across multiple iterations, and it holds Goldsmiths Public Engagement recognition.
That matters here for a plain reason. Most consultancies claiming a south London presence are claiming an address. What we can show south of the river is a piece of work, made with a south London institution, that an independent panel recognised. If you want to see what an immersive behaviour change programme actually is before commissioning one, the case studies are the honest place to start.
What South London Organisations Actually Look Like
South London is not one market. Within the four boroughs that carry most of the work there are five distinct organisational populations, each with its own register, its own pressures and its own idea of what credible development looks like. A programme designed for one of them will fail politely in front of another.
The differences are not cosmetic. A scripted scenario that lands with a media business at More London reads as glib to a clinical audience at Denmark Hill, and a scenario built for a hospital ward reads as slow to a professional services team on a deadline. Cultural register is the single biggest variable in immersive design, which is why scenarios are written for the population rather than pulled off a shelf.
- Professional services on the river at London Bridge. The More London estate lists PwC, Ernst and Young, Norton Rose Fulbright and Gowling WLG among its occupiers, alongside The Body Shop, PRS for Music, Kobalt Music, Zopa and Jacobs Engineering. Partner behaviour, hybrid working and client-facing pressure dominate the agenda.
- Teaching hospitals and mental health trusts. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust employs 23,600 staff across Guy's Hospital at Great Maze Pond and St Thomas' on Westminster Bridge Road. King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at Denmark Hill serves Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley. South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust runs more than 240 services for a local population of 1.3 million across Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Croydon. Our behaviour change training for NHS trusts is built for exactly these settings.
- Universities and research institutes. King's College London has its Guy's Campus next to Guy's Hospital, home to the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine and the Dental Institute, and its Denmark Hill Campus at 16 De Crespigny Park, SE5 8AF, home of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. Goldsmiths sits in New Cross. Evidence-led, discursive, sceptical of frameworks with no research behind them.
- Croydon's commercial base. Invest in Croydon puts more than 16,000 businesses in the borough, the largest and most diverse SME base in London, generating 11.7 billion pounds in gross value added, across sectors including financial services, insurance, engineering, education and media. The borough has more than 400,000 residents.
- Local government and public bodies. Southwark Council at 160 Tooley Street, SE1 2QH, together with Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon councils and the charities and professional bodies headquartered nearby, where politically sensitive change is a standing leadership demand.
The Behaviours South London Clients Ask Us to Move
Across those five populations, four behavioural targets come up again and again. Each is specific enough to rehearse, which is the test we apply before agreeing to a brief.
None of these is a knowledge problem. People generally know what good looks like. What they have never done is practise the moment under pressure, with a real person in front of them and a real cost to getting it wrong.
- Speaking up. The moment where the cost of raising a concern feels immediate and the cost of silence feels abstract. The underlying condition is psychological safety. Our production The Death of Jane Doe, recognised by the CorpComms Awards, rehearses exactly these moments, and speak-up culture is a standing agenda item across the south London trusts.
- Intervening in harassment. Since 26 October 2024 employers have had a legal duty to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment, and from 30 October 2026 that duty becomes taking all reasonable steps, according to Acas. Awareness modules are a thin answer to that. The Accused, recognised by the Goldsmiths Public Engagement Award, rehearses the decision a bystander makes in real time.
- The difficult performance conversation. Its shape changes with the sector: the consultant whose clinical work is strong and whose teamwork is fragile, the academic whose research is excellent and whose leadership is not, the high-billing partner whose behaviour costs the team. The structure underneath is the same, and it is rehearsable.
- Working across boundaries. South London forces it. Trusts deliver with university researchers at Denmark Hill and Guy's, councils work with NHS and voluntary sector partners, professional services teams embed inside client organisations. The skill is leading people over whom you hold no formal authority.
How a South London Programme Is Built
The method does not change by postcode. What changes is the material inside it.
The work starts with a diagnostic, usually three to four weeks: interviews, observation of routine work, and a structured analysis of the target behaviour using the COM-B model from the Behaviour Change Wheel (Michie, van Stralen and West, 2011). COM-B asks what makes the behaviour hard rather than what people do not know, and splits the answer into capability, opportunity and motivation. That distinction decides what gets designed.
From the diagnostic comes a scripted scenario, written for the population and performed by professional actors. Delivery is a rehearsal cycle rather than a presentation: run the scenario, debrief the behaviour that was observed, run it again with the learning applied, debrief again. The repetition is what shifts behaviour. The scenario on its own does not.
Embedding runs roughly six weeks afterwards, with structured follow-through, accountability conversations at leadership level, and adjustments to the workplace conditions that make the target behaviour hard. Measurement is at Kirkpatrick Level 3 as a minimum, observed behaviour in real work, and Level 4 where the brief allows. Satisfaction scores collected in the room are not a measure of anything we sell.
Starting From South London
The first step is a 30-minute working conversation. For south London organisations an in-person briefing is usually straightforward: most of the catchment is a single train from Kentish Town, and diagnostic visits, design reviews and post-programme debriefs all work better face to face. Bring the behaviour you want to move rather than a training specification. If a different provider would serve you better, we will say so.
A typical engagement runs about thirteen weeks end to end: three weeks diagnostic, two weeks design, delivery, six weeks embedding, then measurement. NHS trust and university procurement through frameworks can add four to eight weeks before that clock starts, and borough council procurement often runs on a similar timetable. Programmes are priced per engagement.
Sidestream was founded by Ben Laumann, an organisational psychologist and theatre director, and Sebastian Flack, a systemic coach and supervisor working across the German-speaking market. Verified client work includes the Metropolitan Police, UCL, the University of Cambridge, Bocconi, Goldsmiths, Imperial College London, the Innocence Project, TCS, WISE and HM Courts and Tribunals. The facilitation is direct and unadorned, with no buzzwords, which is how we work everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sidestream actually based in south London?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. The office is at 58 Malden Road, London NW5 3HG, north of the river. Kentish Town is a Thameslink station on the line that runs through Blackfriars and Elephant and Castle, so Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham are a single train away and Croydon is straightforward. Our real south London claim is a body of work, not a serviced desk.
What is the Goldsmiths connection?
The Accused, one of two Sidestream productions to win recognition, was delivered with HM Courts and Tribunals and Goldsmiths University and holds the Goldsmiths Public Engagement Award. Goldsmiths, University of London is in New Cross, SE14 6NW, founded in 1891 and a constituent college of the University of London since 1904. More than 600 participants have been through the production across multiple iterations.
Which south London organisations does this suit?
Five recognisable types: professional services and media businesses around London Bridge and the More London estate, the NHS trusts at Guy's, St Thomas' and Denmark Hill and across South London and Maudsley, the King's College London campuses at Guy's and Denmark Hill plus Goldsmiths in New Cross, Croydon's financial services and insurance base, and the Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon councils.
Does the October 2026 harassment duty change what training we need?
From 30 October 2026 the employer duty becomes taking all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment, tightened from the reasonable steps duty in force since 26 October 2024, according to Acas. An awareness module is a thin answer to that. Rehearsed intervention, where people practise the moment of speaking up and the practice is documented, produces both the capability and an evidence trail.
How do you know a south London programme worked?
Kirkpatrick Level 3 is the minimum standard: observed behaviour in real work after the programme, not a satisfaction score collected in the room. Level 4 measures are used where the brief allows, such as speak-up rates, escalation behaviour, retention or patient experience indicators. The measurement design is agreed during the diagnostic, before anything is scripted, so the target is fixed in advance.
How does a south London engagement start?
With a 30-minute working conversation, in person where that is practical, which for most of the catchment it is. Bring the specific behaviour you want to move rather than a training brief. If Sidestream is not the right fit, we will say so. A typical cycle then runs about thirteen weeks: diagnostic, design, delivery, embedding, measurement.
